Are You Stuck?
I would love to hear from you if you are:
- Anxious, stressed or depressed
- Taking drugs to cope
- Going through grief
- Living with harmful experiences
- Being physically hurt and feeling powerless
- Experiencing problems in close relationships.
I have worked with many clients experiencing addiction and mental health issues, but I specialise in dealing with underlying trauma.
I have a good general understanding of a wide range of issues, and a range of skill-sets to apply to working with children and their families, couples and individuals.
My Counselling Style
I am very focused on you, not much distracts me when I am working in the session hour.
It's like navigating a complex map through what is going on. Reading all your signs and making sure we are staying on the best road to recovery. We focus on the work you need to do and what can I offer at any point of time to best progress that. When we have a clear pathway in the session, the process usually flows quite deeply. I have lots of different models/interventions to use and call on. I utilise the present moment (which is always full!) and at the same time keep in mind the goals for you that we've agreed on. |
Individuals, Couples and Families
I can work with couples and apply emotionally focused therapy.
I work with individuals – most of whom have some trauma in their background and come into my realm because of addiction, mental health issues and chronic behaviours etc.
I work with other health professionals when needed (for example, doctors and district health boards) when issues require medical and psychiatric support.
I also facilitate single session consultations with families and clients who just want a one-off (or up to 2) sessions.

My Counselling Models
My practice is integrative which means I don’t practice from a pure approach, but instead take the strengths from a lot of different methods to apply to different situations and issues.
I was originally trained in counselling (or 'talking therapy') which outlines counselling as a process and relies on an open trusting therapeutic relationship. That remains the mainstay of my practice.
Other methods are added like techniques, such as:

- The Māori holistic model Te whare tapa whā
- Action-orientated techniques like gestalt and psychodrama
- Somatic techniques like energy medicine
- Narrative therapy
- Transactional analysis
- Cognitive behavioural therapy
- Motivational interviewing
- Family systems
- Positive psychology
- Psychotherapeutic leanings around resolution of past trauma
- Relaxation and breathing techniques
- Healing metaphor and sensitive language.
There's a lot of jargon in there! Don't let it blind you. Just rest-assured that I am experienced in quite a number of counselling modalities. We use a unique mix for your unique situation.
